This 30-Minute York Peppermint Patties Copycat Recipe will give you your favorite childhood candy quickly and with just a few ingredients. Plus, they can be made dairy free and you can even add little toppings to them as well for extra flavor! They require no baking or a thermometer and are the easiest holiday candy to make.
These little cool candies are something I enjoy making during the holidays because they are SO easy! They also have the quintessential flavors of the season with chocolate and peppermint.
I love adding them to our Christmas reindeer chex mix as well as our Christmas crack chex mix. Buddy the Elf would also approve of topping our pancake spaghetti with them!
We have found it extra fun to add a little crunch with crispy cereal, holiday granola or chopped candy canes before dipping. We also love topping them with flaky sea salt or more crushed candy canes. The skies the limit...
Why I love these copycat peppermint patties
- No thermometer required candy: I love making holiday candies but I am not a fan of ones that require a thermometer and require you to stand there the whole time watching it meticulously.
- Perfectly sweet and fresh: The chocolate gives it just the right amount of sweetness and the peppermint gives it a fresh taste just like Christmas candy canes!
- No baking: These little treats keep your kitchen cool as they don't require any baking. Plus, they can be made in only 30 minutes. They are a great addition to our easy Christmas popcorn too.
- Make ahead option: To save some time in the kitchen on Christmas or before, make these treats weeks in advance and serve at your convenience.
What you need to make them
- Powdered Sugar: This gives it just the right sweetness and smooth center.
- Butter: Softened and combined with the powdered sugar for a smooth, rich filling.
- Heavy Cream: This brings everything in the filling together.
- Peppermint Extract: This is that holiday flavor addition that makes it a true peppermint patty.
- Chocolate: You can use milk or dark. You can even use dairy free!
- Coconut Oil: This helps make your chocolate for dipping nice and smooth.
- Optional Toppings: We like to add a crunchy cereal to the top before dipping or crushed candy canes. You can also add flaky sea salt.
How to make homemade peppermint patties
Prepare the filling: In a stand mixer, combine all ingredients except chocolate using a paddle mixer and mix on high until dough comes together and is no longer sticky (if needed, add a few teaspoons of powdered sugar until no longer sticky)
Freeze: Place dough onto a long piece of plastic wrap in a 1 1/2-2 inch cylinder shape then roll and secure the ends of the plastic wrap then freeze for 20 minutes
Make the discs: Remove from the fridge and take off the plastic wrap then slice into small (1/4 inch) discs
Prepare the chocolate: Meanwhile, in a glass bowl heat the chocolate with coconut oil in 20 second intervals in the microwave until completely melted, stirring in between
Save this post for later!
Make the candies: Once the chocolate is melted, proceed to dip individual patty discs completely into the chocolate carefully using a fork then place on wax paper to cool
Cool and Serve: Let the patties harden then serve
Can I make these patties larger?
Yes, simply roll your filling cylinder larger. You make get less but they sure are fun in a king size! Extra patties can be frozen for future use.
Can they be made dairy free?
Absolutely! Just swap out the butter for dairy free butter, the cream for dairy free heavy cream and the chocolate for dairy free chocolate. We've done it many times and they are great!
Storing and make ahead
Storing leftovers: If you have leftovers, place them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days. You can also freeze leftovers. They’ll stay good in the freezer for up to three months.
Make ahead option: These peppermint patties can be made plenty ahead of time. I recommend storing them in an airtight container or ziplock baggie in the refrigerator or freezer.
What to serve with peppermint patties
I like to serve a big scoop of vanilla ice cream with my crushed peppermint patties for a holiday themed frozen treat. They are also great on a Christmas charcuterie board or in holiday cookie boxes along side Christmas tree snack cakes.
