Hosting parties and celebrating holidays with my friends and family is one of my favorite things to do. These cake pops, along with my other easy entertaining recipes, always add a fun touch of color (and delicious flavor) to any party! So whether you're having a big party or a cozy family get together, these cake pops will please everyone.

What I love about these patriotic cake pops

    • They're adorable: Not only is this cake pop recipe yummy, the presentation is simply adorable.
    • The flavor pairings: Delicious cake blended with creamy frosting and dipped in white chocolate, what could get better than that? Besides maybe these valentines cake pops on Valentine's Day.
    • Seriously, so easy: With a few pantry staple ingredients and straightforward steps, you'll have a batch of these 4th of July cake pops ready for your party or barbecue. Serve with a 4th of July fruit pizza or a layered 4th of July mocktail.
    • Easy to customize: You can chose your favorite cake, frosting, candy coating color, and sprinkles. This recipe is super easy to make your own.

    Ingredients for cake pops

    • Baked cake: I like to use a vanilla cake for this recipe, but you can use your favorite type of cake.
    • Almond bark: Almond bark works great for a candy coating and helping the stick stay inside the cake pop. Plus, it's super easy to melt without burning. Another type of candy melts will also work.
    • Frosting: Vanilla frosting is my go to, but this champagne frosting is also delicious if you're looking for something unique.
    • Sprinkles: Red, white, and blue sprinkles for a festive 4th of July cake pop.

What kind of cake should I use?

You can use your favorite type of cake. I like to use a yellow or vanilla cake mix because it's easy and everyone always loves it. Additionally, red velvet cake would work well for these red, white, and blue cake pops!

How to make 4th of July cake pops

The cake mixture: Make or buy your favorite cake and crumble it into a large mixing bowl. Slowly incorporate your frosting of choice until it's completely combined.

Roll: Using a cookie scoop or ice cream scoop, roll the cake into even balls and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Step-by-step process for making 4th of July cake pops: mixing ingredients, baking the cake, forming cake balls, and inserting sticks for a festive treat

Candy coating: Dip a lollipop stick into the melted almond bark and insert it into one of the cake pops. Repeat this until all of the cake pops have a stick.

Dip: When the chocolate on the stick has hardened, dip each cake pop into the almond bark and let set on the baking sheet.

Can I use white chocolate chips?

Yes, you can use white chocolate chips instead of almond bark. When melting white chocolate chips, melt in the microwave in intervals with 1tbsp of coconut oil. Stir in between intervals to ensure the chocolate chips don't melt.

Tips for making 4th of July cake pops

    • Chill the cake: Make SURE you refrigerate the cake for at least 30 minutes before rolling into balls. This helps the cake maintain it's shape and prevents the cake balls from falling off the sticks.
    • Double dip: For a thicker coating, you can double dip the cake pops in the melted chocolate after the first layer has cooled.
    • Add food coloring: If you want to add an extra pop of red, white, and blue you can add food coloring to the melted chocolate or to the cake itself.

How long do cake balls last?

If you happen to have leftover cake balls, they will last in the fridge for up to 5 days. Make sure to store in an airtight container.

Can I freeze these cake balls?

Yes, just like any other cake, you can freeze these cake pops. Freeze them in ziplock baggies with layers or parchment paper in between. When you're ready to serve, let the sit on the counter at room temperature for 15-20 minutes.
