These fun ghostly halloween sandwiches have tasty layers of turkey and cheese with a touch of secret spread that is both cheesy and bursting with flavor. They are the perfect 10-minute spooky treat for your festive spread and everyone will love them!

    Halloween ghost sandwiches

If you know me, you know I'll find any and every excuse to throw a party. Like my Halloween brunch and witches night out, there's something magical about dressing up in fun costumes, and enjoying themed treats with friends and family. These sandwiches bring a festive element to any party, without spending hours in the kitchen.

Why you'll love these halloween ghost sandwiches

    • Easy to make: With simple ingredients and easy steps, you can have a large number of sandwiches ready in no time.
    • Perfect for parties or lunches: Since this recipe is so easy, you can make them for parties or school lunches with minimal prep time. Saving you time in the kitchen!
    • Kid friendly: Keep the little ones entertained by having them help with this recipe.
    • Customizable: Just like any other sandwich, you can customize ingredients to your liking. The options are endless when it comes to a classic sandwich.

    What you need

    • Bread: I use gluten-free bread, but feel free to use any bread you prefer, including whole wheat, white bread, or sourdough bread.
    • Turkey: While I recommend turkey, you can substitute with other deli meats like ham or chicken.
    • White Cheddar Cheese: White cheddar helps create the ghostly look, but you can use any cheese you like, especially if you add extra cheese to the middle of the sandwich.
    • Black Gel Icing: Used to create the ghostly eyes on the sandwiches.
    • Other: Butter, cream cheese, spices, parmesan, and onion salt are just a few special ingredients I like to use to take this sandwich to the next level. See the recipe card for the full list and instructions.

What type of bread works best?

This is truly up to personal preference. I have celiac disease, so I use gluten free bread but wheat bread, white bread, or sourdough bread make great options. Just make sure the bread is sturdy enough to hold the fillings and maintain it's shape.

    How to make Halloween sandwiches

The butter mixture: Put the butter, cream cheese, Parmesan, garlic, and herbs in a mixing bowl. Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, combine until smooth. Chill in the fridge for 10 minutes.

Assemble: Using a knife, spread the butter mixture over one slice of bread. Then, add the turkey and sandwich the other slice of bread. Top off with white cheddar cheese.

Details: Dot the cheese with black gel icing for the eyes. Then cut the sandwich with a ghost cookie cutter.

Can I make sandwiches ahead of time?

Yes, you can make these sandwiches ahead of time for a party or to prep for lunches. Assemble them as directed then wrap in plastic wrap or store in an airtight bag. Keep them in the refrigerator until you're ready to serve.

    Tips for recipe success

    • Try out different shapes - Try out different cookie cutter shapes for fun Halloween shapes. For example, use cheddar cheese and make pumpkin sandwiches!
    • Use different deli meats - You can try different deli meat, like ham, or you could use multiple types of meat to add different flavors to the sandwich.
    • Gummy candy - Serve with gummy worms on the side for an extra creepy feel.

    How to store leftovers

If you happen to have leftover sandwiches, you can store them in a ziplock baggie or wrapped in plastic wrap in the fridge for 2-3 days. They make great school lunches for the kids.

What goes well with these sandwiches?

Fruits, vegetables, soups, and/or salads are all great side options. I love serving a rainbow fruit platter or delicious veggie board as a colorful side option. You can also serve these sandwiches on a halloween charcuterie board or a fall charcuterie board.
